    The group IIa metal containing catalyst system of this invention can be utilized to synthesize rubbery polymers having a high trans microstructure by solution polymerization. Such rubbery polymers having a high trans microstructure content, such as polybutadiene rubber, styrene-isoprene-butadiene rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, can be utilized in tire tread rubbers that exhibit improved wear and tear characteristics. This invention more specifically reveals a catalyst system which is comprised of (a) an organolithium compound, including organolithium functionalized compounds, (b) a group IIa metal salt selected from the group consisting of group IIa metal salts of di(alkylene glycol)alkylethers and group IIa metal salts of tri(alkylene glycol) alkylethers, and (c) an organoaluminum compound, and optionally an organomagnesium compound. The subject invention further discloses a process for synthesizing rubbery polymers having a high trans microstructure by a process that comprises polymerizing a conjugated diolefin monomer in an organic solvent in the presence of a catalyst system that is comprised of (a) an organolithium compound, (b) a group IIa metal salt selected from the group consisting of group IIa metal salts of amino glycols and group IIa metal salts of glycol ethers, and (c) an organoaluminum compound.

    A pipe coating composition is provided having good crack resistance properties that consists essentially of about 50 to 70 wt.% mineral aggregate, about 15 to 35 wt.% finely divided mineral filler, about 5 to 20 wt.% asphalt, about 0.05 to 7 wt.% of a rubbery radial teleblock copolymer, about 0 to 7 wt.% of an oil, and about 0 to 0.5 wt.% of a fibrous material. Furthermore, the crack resistance of a pipe coating composition is dramatically improved by using an asphalt rubber composition in which the rubber is an epoxy-coupled radial teleblock copolymer as compared to a silicon tetrahalide-coupled radial teleblock copolymer of essentially the same structure.

    It has been determined that 1,2,3-trialkoxybenzenes and 1,2,4-trialkoxybenzenes can be utilized in order to increase the vinyl content of polydienes which are prepared utilizing lithium catalyst systems. For instance, it has been determined that 1,2,3-trimethoxybenzene and 1,2,4-trimethoxybenzene are very strong modifiers for utilization in such polymerizations. The utilization of the trialkoxybenzene modifiers of the present invention is highly advantageous because they promote fast polymerization rates and can be used to produce polymers having high vinyl contents.

    Metals from Groups I and II and organometallic compounds thereof can be used to catalyze the polymerization of diene monomers into polymers. The polymers formed in such polymerizations are terminated with the metal used to catalyze the polymerization and are sometimes referred to as living polymers. Very useful blends of such polymers can be made by utilizing the process of the present invention. More specifically, the present invention discloses a process for preparing a polydiene rubber blend comprising: (1) polymerizing at least one diene monomer utilizing at least one catalyst selected from the group consisting of Group I metals, Group II metals, organometallic compounds containing a Group I metal, and organometallic compounds containing a Group II metal, to a conversion which is within the range of 30% to 70% to produce low molecular weight polydiene chains; (2) joining from 20% to 70% of said low molecular weight polydiene chains with a suitable branching agent; and (3) allowing the polymerization to continue so as to produce said polydiene rubber blends.
