  A composition suitable for topical application to mammalian skin and hair comprises a hair growth promoter molecule, comprising a molecular fragment having the structure: where A is chosen from O and S; B is chosen from NH, O and S; C¹ and C² are carbon atoms; D is chosen from -O-, -S-, -NR-, X and Y are the same or different and are chosen from H, -OH, -NH₂, Z is chosen from C₁ to C₂₂ alkyl, -OR, and -NHR; R is chosen from -H, and C₁ to C₂₂ alkyl, C₂ to C₁₈ acyl; n is an integer of from 1 to 10; m is 0 or 1, the value(s) of each m being the same or different; with the provisos that: a. any one of the D groups can form a linkage to B (when B is NH) or to C¹ or C² to form a ring structure; b. when A is O and B is O, and n is 2 or 3, and either X or Y is -OH, then the total number of -OH groups in the hair growth promoter molecule (excluding those present in --OH groups) must be < 3 and c. when n is >1, then any D group can be the same or different from the remaining D group or groups; Together with a cosmetically acceptable vehicle for the hair growth promoter.
