  New 3-(4-acylaminopiperazin-1-ylalkyl)indole compounds, and their immediate precursors possessing antihypertensive and tranquilizing properties, their physiologically acceptable salts and a process for the preparation thereof are described; said compounds are of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein X represents hydrogen or hydroxy, n can vary from 0-1, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each represents hydrogen or alkoxy of 1-2 carbon atoms; R.sub.3 represents hydrogen or alkyl of 1-3 carbon atoms and Z represents hydrogen or ##STR2## and R.sub.4 is selected from a member of the group consisting of alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms, benzhydryl, cycloalkyl of 6-10 carbon atoms; bridged cycloalkyl of 6-10 carbon atoms, phenyl, mono, di or tri substituted phenyl, and heterocyclic moieties such as pyridyl, furyl, pyrrolyl, thienyl, pyrazinyl.
