Allylphenylsulfonyl lithium, generated from allyl phenyl sulfone and nBuLi, reacts with chiral diepoxides to give dihydroxycyclopentane derivatives in good yields. The synthesis of the aldehyde 2, which is a key intermediate for brefeldin A, was achieved using this reaction.
