  α-Hydroxy ketones (acyloins) and their acetate or mesylate derivatives were reduced to the corresponding ketones in good yields by treatment with [V2Cl3(THF)6]2[Zn2Cl6] complex prepared in situ from VCl3(THF)3 and zinc.
