Self-Organized Honeycomb-Patterned Microporous Polystyrene Thin Films Fabricated by Calix[4]arene Derivatives

Calix[4]arene derivatives bearing carboxyl groups at the upper rim and alkyl groups at the lower rim were synthesized. Micrometer-size porous honeycomb-patterned thin films were prepared by evaporating chloroform solution of polystyrene containing the calixarene derivatives under high humidity. These films were coated on gold electrodes of QCM, and the high-frequency changes were observed to detect volatile organic compounds such as dichlorobenzene.

Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and its receptor PDGFR are required for tumor growth and angiogenesis, so disruption of the PDGFâPDGFR interaction should lead to starvation of tumors and reduction of tumor growth. Potent PDGF antagonists have been discovered through the synthesis of a series of calix[4]arene-based compounds that are designed to bind to the three-loop region of PDGF. The effect of lower-rim alkylation, linker and number of interacting head groups on the calix[4]arene scaffold on PDGF affinity and cellular activity has been investigated.
Salt formation affects the conformational and assembly properties of p-carboxylatocalix[4]arenes

The conformational properties and self-assembly behaviour of the p-carboxylatocalix[4]arenes, when in the presence of a pyridine template, are well understood. Salt formation with these molecules, a process driven by the introduction of an amino group to the 2-position of the pyridine template, has dramatic consequences on both building block conformation and the resulting self-assembly.

Control over molecule conformation and transition metal cluster formation has been combined to afford metal–organiccalixarene building blocks that induce nanotube formation in the solid state. The resulting assembly type can have chosen magnetic properties, and has three types of solvent filled channel that differ in diameter and shape (see picture).
