Self-Organized Honeycomb-Patterned Microporous Polystyrene Thin Films Fabricated by Calix[4]arene Derivatives

Calix[4]arene derivatives bearing carboxyl groups at the upper rim and alkyl groups at the lower rim were synthesized. Micrometer-size porous honeycomb-patterned thin films were prepared by evaporating chloroform solution of polystyrene containing the calixarene derivatives under high humidity. These films were coated on gold electrodes of QCM, and the high-frequency changes were observed to detect volatile organic compounds such as dichlorobenzene.
Salt formation affects the conformational and assembly properties of p-carboxylatocalix[4]arenes

The conformational properties and self-assembly behaviour of the p-carboxylatocalix[4]arenes, when in the presence of a pyridine template, are well understood. Salt formation with these molecules, a process driven by the introduction of an amino group to the 2-position of the pyridine template, has dramatic consequences on both building block conformation and the resulting self-assembly.
[structure: see text] We present a novel type of molecularcapsule formed by self-organization of calix[4]arenes with several oppositely charged functional groups located at their upper rims. In highly polar solvents, the complementary half-spheres form stable 1:1 complexes with association constants of up to 7 x 10(5) M(-)(1) in methanol. Control over molecule conformation and transition metal cluster formation has been combined to afford metal–organiccalixarene building blocks that induce nanotube formation in the solid state. The resulting assembly type can have chosen magnetic properties, and has three types of solvent filled channel that differ in diameter and shape (see picture).

A potential anti-HIV and HCV drug candidate is highly desirable as coinfection has become a worldwide public health challenge. A potent compound based on a tetrabutoxy-calix[4] arene scaffold that possesses dual inhibition for both HIV and HCV is described. Structural activity relationship studies demonstrate the effects of lower-rim alkylation in maintaining cone conformation and upper-rim interacting head groups on the calix[4] arene play key roles for its potent dual antiviral activities.
