    An efficient entry into pyrazol-3-ones is described starting from propenoic acids that were first transformed into the corresponding hydrazides. Oxidation of the hydrazides gave the diazenes and the latter cyclized to pyrazol-3-ones on treatment with ZrCl4. The methoxycarbonyl protection of the N-1 of the pyrazolone derivatives was easily removed under mild reaction conditions.

    4‐Nitropyrazolin‐5‐ones have been synthesized by the nitration of pyrazolin‐5‐ones at room temperature by employing the Fe(NO3)3/NaNO2 system. The method demonstrated selectivity towards the 4‐position of pyrazolin‐5‐ones even in the presence of NPh and allyl substituents, which are sensitive to nitration. It was shown that other systems containing FeIII and nitrites, namely Fe(NO3)3/tBuONO, Fe(ClO4)3/NaNO2

    We describe herein an efficient approach for the preparation of 4-substituted 2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrazol-3-ones starting from Morita-Baylis-Hillman adducts. These heterocycles were obtained in two or three steps as single isomers with moderate to good overall yields. One efficient and alternative methodology for the synthesis of alpha-methyl-beta-ketoesters is also reported (up to 91 % yield). Additionally, the mechanism of formation of pyrazolones was investigated employing ESI-MS/MS reaction monitoring.
