  Abstract The first total synthesis of cyclomaltooctaose (gamma-cyclodextrin) is described, in 21 steps starting from maltose, with 0.02% overall yield. A crucial intramolecular cyclization was executed by using a properly protected glucooctaosyl fluoride as a key intermediate.
