The reaction of alkyl halides with mercuric thiocyanate in tetrahydrofuran (THF) affords mainly the THF-incorporated products, R[O(CH2)4]nNCS and R[O(CH2)4]nSCN (mostly n=1 and 2), where the isomer ratios (N/S ratios) are nearly 1. The reaction of EtO(CH2)mBr (m=2–5) with mercuric thiocyanate in THF or n-Bu2O proceeds rapidly only in the case of m=4 to give EtO(CH2)4NCS and EtO(CH2)4SCN, the N/S ratio

The reaction of ω-ethoxyalkyl bromides (Cn: n=2–5) with silver(I) cyanide or nitrite in less polar solvents to give the corresponding isocyanide or a mixture of the corresponding alkyl nitrite and nitroalkane respectively, proceeded with ease only when n=4. A compound expressed by the following formula (1) and a liquid crystalline composition with using it are provided: ##STR1## wherein, either one of rings A, B and C denotes ##STR2## remaining two of them denote each independently ##STR3## R denotes an alkyl group or an alkoxy group with 4-16 carbon atoms, R* denotes ##STR4## in which, R.sub.1 denotes CH.sub.3, CF.sub.3, CH.sub.2 F or CHF.sub.2, R.sub.2 denotes an alkyl group with 1-10 carbon atoms and m denotes 2-12.
