An aromatic sesquiterpene, cuparene (IV), has been isolated from Chamaecyparis thyoides, Biota orientalis and Widdringtonia. Cuparene gives terephthalic acid on oxidation with dilute nitric acid and (+)-camphonanic acid (III) on prolonged treatment with ozone and is therefore 1-(4-methylphenyl)-1:2:2-trimethylcyclopentane.
