An enantioselective synthesis of (+)-ginnol (17) illustrates how Sharpless' asymmetric dihydroxylation may be used for the asymmetricsynthesis of monoalcohols. Zur Isomerisierung unverzweigter funktionalisierter Alkene mit terminaler Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Doppelbindung unter Erhalt des Kohlenstoffgerüstes behandelt man diese in Gegenwart von Rhodium(III)- oder Iridium(III)verbindungen bei Temperaturen von 70 bis 160 °C. Als funktionalisierte Verbindungen mit endständiger Doppelbindung setzt man Alpha- Omega-Alkenole, deren Ester, Alpha-Omega-Alkencarbonsäuren und deren Ester ein, als Rhodium(III)verbindungen vorzugsweise Rhodium(III)halogenide, insbesondere Rhodium(III)chloridhydrat. Die Reaktionsprodukte enthalten die Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Doppelbindung nicht in Konjugation zur funktionellen Gruppe.
