Novel chiral imidazolium salts have been synthesized as examples of chiral ionic liquids with a spiro skeleton. Effects of N-substituents and counteranions on the melting point of spiro imidazolium salts and their chiral discrimination abilities are described.

The selective binding of manganese(II) ions is a challenging problem with potential biomedical applications. We have designed a series of bioinspired hexadentate chelating ligands that allow for systematic, sterically-controlled tuning of the ligand cavity size in order to explore the feasibility of size-based selectivity for Mn2+ binding over other first-row divalent transition metal ions.
