The reaction of 4′-methoxyacetophenone with manganese(III) acetate in the presence of ammonium chloride yielded 2-chloro-4′-methoxyacetophenone (2a) and 2,2-dichloro-4′-methoxyacetophenone (3a). The reaction of 2a with these reagents gave 3a, 4′-methoxy-2,2,2-trichloroacetophenone, and 1,4-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,2,3,3-tetrachloro-1,4-butanedione (8a).
