Molecular and crystal structure and stability of triiodides of quinolinium derivatives

1,2,4-Trimethylquinolinium triiodide (I) and 1-ethyl-2,4-dimethylquinolinium (II) triiodide are synthesized and studied by X-ray diffraction analysis. The layered structures of compounds I and II are formed by mixed stacks of cations and anions. Crystals of compound II consist of two types of anionic chains. The coordinating ability of the corresponding organic iodides toward molecular iodine in chloroform solutions is studied.
