  Lithiation of 3-bromo-3-hexene, subsequent reaction 2:1 with ethyl propionate and treatment of the intermediate tertiary alcohol with p-toluenesulfonic acid gives a mixture of 1,2,3,4,5-pentaethylcyclopentadiene and 3-ethylidene 1,2,4,5-tetraethylcyclopentene. Metalation with n-butyllithium gives pure pentaethylcyclopentadienyllithium after washing with pentane.
