A short and efficient synthesis of a key intermediate for the formation of guaianolides is described. The potentiality of is illustrated by its transformation into the natural occurring guaianolide, (±)-compressanolide .

Preparation of highly functionalized 16 constitutes one of the first attempts at the synthesis of the A/B carbon skeleton of the 11(15-->1)-abeotaxanes.
