A process for the enzymatic separation of optical isomers (S+) and (R ) of 2-aminobutanol comprises esterifying a N-carbamovl derivative of formula:
wherein R is a C1-C3 alkyl group or a benzyl group, with an ester of formula:
wherein R, R, which may be the same or different, are C1-C6 alkyl groups, at a temperature from 0 to 60°C, in the presence of a lipase capable of giving rise to the esterification, in a stereoselective way, on optical isomer (R') of the N-carbamoyl derivative, and separating and hydrolyzing, by means of known methods, the obtained products (non-reacted (S) N-carbamoyl derivative, and the formed ester) to give rise to (S+) 2-aminobutanol and (R ) 2-aminobutanol respectively.
