    The present invention provides a polyvinyl ether compound containing an alkylene glycol or polyoxyalkylene glycol unit and a vinyl ether unit in a molecule and having a molecular weight in the range of 300 to 3,000. It shows high volume resistivity and a high viscosity index, so it can be favorably used as lubricating oil for a compression refrigerator.

    A polyvinyl ether compound (including one having a specified terminal group) having constitutional units each represented by general formula (I) wherein R₃, R₄ and R₅ represent each H or alkyl; R⁶ represents alkylen; R⁷ represents alkyl; and k represents 0 to 10; and a process for producing the same by polymerizing a vinyl ether monomer in the presence of a specified initiator comprising a combination of a Brönsted acid, Lewis acid or organometallic compound with an adduct of a carboxylic acid with water, alcohol, phenol, acetal or vinyl ether. The compound is useful as lubricating oil, etc. A process for producing an ether compound by the reaction of an acetal or ketal represented by general formula (II) with hydrogen in the presence of an acidic substance and a solid catalyst having a hydrogenating ability to convert the group R³³O- or R³⁴O- into a hydrogen atom.

    There is disclosed a lubricating oil for compression-type refrigerators comprising a polyvinyl ether compound which contains a constituting unit represented by the general formula (I), a polyvinyl ether compound which contains constituting units represented by each one of the general formulae (I) and (II), or a mixture of these polyvinyl ether compounds, as the main component thereof. Ratio by mol of carbon to oxygen in the above polyvinyl ether compounds is 4.2 to 7.0. Also disclosed is a lubricating oil for compression-type refrigerators comprising a polyvinyl ether compound containing constituting units which are both represented by the general formula (I) but between which R5 is different. The lubricating oil for compression-type refrigerators has excellent compatibility with hydrofluorocarbons, such as 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane, and hydrochlorofluorocarbons which can be used as the refrigerant to replace compounds causing environmental pollution such as dichlorodifluoromethane, shows low hygroscopicity, and exhibits superior stability and lubricating property.

    A refrigerating oil composition which exhibits excellent lubrication properties when used in combination with certain types of coolant, such as a hydrofluorocarbon coolant, which may serve as substitutes for chlorofluorocarbon coolants which have been implicated as causing environmental problems. The refrigerating oil composition of the present invention is obtained by incorporating, into a component (A); i.e., a base oil containing a synthetic oil, a component (B); i.e, a polyalkylene glycol derivative of formula (I) having a number average molecular weight of 200-3,000:         R1-(OR2)m-(OR3)n-OR4     (I) wherein R1 and R4 represent C1-C30 hydrocarbon groups, etc.; R2 represents a C2-C4 alkylene group; R3 represents a C2-C30 alkylene group; m and n are numbers that satisfy the above-described molecular weight conditions, wherein n may be 0; and at least one of R1, R3, and R4 has a hydrocarbon group having six or more carbon atoms.
