Chloromethyllithium carbenoid has been chemoselectively added to cyclicenones (5‐, 6‐ and 7‐membered systems, including two natural products) to provide chloromethyl allylic alcohols. Under the optimized reaction conditions neither concomitant (n+1) homologation nor conjugateaddition or Simmons–Smith‐like cyclopropanation takes place. The invention relates to a method of controlling insects (in particular insects of the order Hemiptera, especially aphids and whitefly) that are resistant to neonicotinoid insecticides, to methods of controlling insects whereby undesired insects are affected but beneficial arthropods are not affected, using compounds of formula I(where A and R1 are as defined above) and, further, to novel compounds of formula I which are useful in the aforementioned methods and/or which possess enhanced insecticidal properties, and to compositions containing said compounds.

As part of our persistent exploration to elucidate the chemistry of Pd-catalyzed CâN coupling, a catalyst system for the coupling reaction of alkenyl tosylates or mesylates with a variety of ureas has been developed. This catalyst system boasts outstanding functional group tolerance and enables the quick synthesis of the entire series of enurea analogs via Pd-catalyzed CâN coupling reactions in excellent yields.

Vinyl phosphates, mesylates, and tosylates derived from 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds are coupled with phenylboronic acid using nickel or palladium catalysts. An application to the area of 2-aryl carbapenem antibiotics is demonstrated. Alternative conditions for the nickel-catalyzed coupling of aryl mesylates are also reported.
