Fourfold C–H Borylation of Anthracene: 1,3,5,7-Tetraborylanthracene and Its Application to 1,3,5,7-Tetraarylanthracenes

Iridium-catalyzed direct tetraborylation of anthracene to give 1,3,5,7-tetrakis(Bpin)anthracene 5 was achieved by using a combination of [Ir(OMe)(COD)]2 and tmphen as the catalyst. Compound 5 was applied to the synthesis of 1,3,5,7-tetraarylanthracenes 7 as a new molecular entity. The latter showed long fluorescence lifetime in the solid state.
Electron Delocalization in Perylene Diimide Helicenes

We report two new helicenes derived from the double fusion of an acene with two perylenediimide (PDI) subunits. These PDI‐helicene homologs exhibit very different structural and electronic properties, despite differing by only a single ring in the link between the PDI units. The shorter inter‐PDI link brings the two PDI subunits closer together, and this results in the collision of their respective
pyrrole‐based anion‐responsive π‐electronic molecules that are linked by appropriate π‐conjugated spacers were synthesized. The dimers showed [2+1]‐, [1+1]‐, and [1+2]‐type anionbinding in solution, whereas [2+2]‐ and [1+2]‐type complexes were formed in the solid state. The dimer with an electron‐deficient spacer unit formed a [2+1]‐type double helical structure with shuttling of the bound anion between
synthesized. It shows C3 symmetry and possesses a flat and rigid conformation with a large equilateral triangle‐like cavity. Macrocycle 1 self‐associates through π–π stacking interactions between the anthracene‐containing macrocyclic aromatic cores with indefinite‐association constant KE=6980 m−1 in CDCl3 at 303 K. Macrocycle 1 also self‐assembles into π‐stacked nanofibers in the drop‐cast film.
