The bis-allylation of ethyleneketal and catechol ketal derivatives of 2,5-hexanedione occurred with a great stereoselectivity. The tetraallylation of bis-catechol ketal derivatives of 2,5-hexanedione and 2-methyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione or the diallylation of 4-phenylbutan-2-one derivatives arise in good yields and these compounds were suitable substrates for ring-closing metathesis leading to 4,4-dialkylcyclopentenes

Alkene–dioxolane alternatingcopolymers 1 and 4, formed from ethane-1,2-diol and the corresponding alkene–carbon monoxidecopolymers, undergo transketalisation reactions with ethane-1,2-dithiol, propane-1,3-dithiol and sulfanylethanol to yield novel dithiolane-, dithiane- and oxathiolane-containing polymers 6, 8, 9, 11 and 12.

Anodicoxidation of β-oxocarboxylate cyclic acetals in anhydrous methanol gives 2-methoxy-1,4-diox-acycloalkanes in 40–60% yields. The mechanism is discussed.

Carbonylprotection: This work highlights the potential of arylazo sulfones as non-ionic photoacid generators (PAGs) to promote the efficient conversion of aldehydes and ketones into acetals, ketals, and 1,3-oxazolidines upon visible-light irradiation. This approach takes advantage of the mild conditions employed and exhibits an easy scalability and a broad substrate scope (80 examples included).
