    Novel 1,3-oxazin-4-one derivatives of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 to R.sup.5 are hydrocarbyl radicals which are optionally substituted, and herbicidal compositions comprising the same as active ingredients and their use in controlling the growth of weeds. The compounds can be produced by reacting substituted 1,3-dioxin-4-one derivatives and N-methylene-alkylamine.

    The first Pd-catalyzed carbonylative couplings of aryl and vinyl halides with vinylogous enolates are reported generating products derived from C-C bond formation exclusively at the γ-position. Good results were obtained with a dienolate derivative of acetoacetate (1,3-dioxin-4-one).     1,3-Oxazin-4-one derivatives represented by general formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is a lower alkyl group, a lower alkenyl group, an aryl group which may be substituted, or an aralkyl group which may be substituted; R.sup.2 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group; R.sup.3 is a lower alkyl group, an aryl group which may be substituted, or an aralkyl group which may be substituted; and R.sup.4 and R.sup.5, independently, each is a lower alkyl group, or R.sup.4 and R.sup.5, taken together with the carbon atom to which they are bonded, combine to form a 3- to 8-membered carbocyclic group which may have a branch of a lower alkyl group. These compounds have broad herbicidal spectra and potent herbicidal activities and in addition high safety to useful crops, so that they are useful as herbicides.

    A herbicidal composition containing as active ingredients the following two components, (A): at least one of 1,3-oxazin-4-one derivatives represented by the following general formula (I) ##STR1## wherein, R is a methyl or an ethyl group, Y is a halogen atom, a lower haloalkyl or a lower haloalkoxy group, and n is 0, 1, 2 or 3, and (B): at least one compound selected from certain known herbicides. It is possible, by use of this composition, to completely control annual gramineous weeds, annual broad-leaved weeds and perennial weeds, without causing any phytotoxicity on agriculturally important crops at a low dose of the active ingredients.

    This invention provides 1,3-oxazin-4-one derivatives represented by following general formula (I): ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 represents a phenyl group which may be substituted; R.sup.2 represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group; R.sup.3 represents a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group, an aralkyl group or a phenyl group which may be substituted; R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 each independently represent a lower alkyl group; and W represents an oxygen atom or a group represented by the formula --N(R.sup.6)-- in which R.sup.6 represents a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group, a lower alkenyl group or a lower alkynyl group. There are also provided herbicidal compositions containing the derivatives and intermediates for preparing them. The compounds according to the present invention exhibit strong herbicidal activities and thus they are useful as active ingredients of agricultural chemicals.
