α,β-Epoxy esters were cleanly converted to α-hydroxy esters with retention of the configurations at the α-carbon atoms via MgI2-promoted regioselective oxirane ring-opening followed by tributyltin hydride-reduction.

An easy and general sequenced elimination/reduction process by means of samariumdiiodide, in the presence of D(2)O, provides an efficient method for synthesizing 2,3-dideuterioesters 2. The reaction can be also carried out in the presence of H(2)O instead of D(2)O, yielding the corresponding saturated esters 4. Other deuterated esters have been also obtained. A mechanism to explain this synthesis

α,β-Epoxy esters were rapidly reduced at room temperature to yield β-hydroxy esters with retention of the configurations at the β-carbon atoms by using SmI2-THF-HMPA system in the presence of N,N-dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE). The conditions were successfully applied to the synthesis of vinylogous δ-hydroxy esters.
