laccase-catalyzed oxidation of (5-alkylfuran-2-yl)carbinols using aerial oxygen as an oxidant selectively affords 6-hydroxy-(2H)-pyran-3(6H)-ones with yields up to 90%. With suitable substituted furan-2-yl carbinols as substrates the procedure allows the efficient preparation of (2H)-pyran-2,5(6H)-diones in a single step.

The binary reagent PhI(OAc)2-Mg(CIO4)2 is very efficient for a high conversion of (2-furyl)-1-alcohols into pyranones. The reaction mechanism can be explained in terms of a SET process, with the generation of a cation radical as key intermediate.

New solid acid catalysts were prepared by bisphenol A, paraformaldehyde, and applied to HAA of 2-methylfuran (2-MF) and cyclohexanone. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of HAA products of 2-MF and cyclopentanone were processed on Ni/SiO2 catalyst.
