A simple method to synthesize a wide range of [Rh(acac)(CO)(NHC)] complexes is described. In situ infra-redspectroscopy permits insights into the mechanism of the reaction, including the identification of a key intermediate. From this intermediate, new synthetic routes are designed to produce related Rh−NHC complexes.
