A high-yielding environmentally benign protocol has been developed for the synthesis of 3-(pyrrol-1-yl)-indolin-2-ones from the reaction of isatin and trans-4-hydroxy-L-proline in aqueous micellar medium. The method is operationally simple and more effective than the previous methods in terms of the yield of the products and the reaction time.

Pyrrole-substituted indolinone derivatives were synthesized by the reaction of 4-hydroxyproline and isatin derivatives in water under catalyst-free conditions. The main advantages of this protocol besides the use of water as a solvent include short reaction time, practical simplicity, and high yield. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
