1-Chloro-2-formyl indenes and tetralenes have been synthesized using Vilsmeier–Haack–Arnold reaction onto indanones and tetralones. Most of these analogues exhibited antitubercular activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv strain with MICs ranging from 30 to 500 μg/mL. Analogue 13 was further modified to some derivatives. The most active analogue 23 showing MIC at 30 μg/mL was further evaluated

An efficient synthesis of alkyl ethers has been developed for o-deactivated aryl halides and 1-halotetralenes. The method shows good regioselectivity towards ortho substituted halides. Alkali metal carbonates (Li2CO3/Na2CO3/K2CO3/Cs2CO3) have been used without a transition metal co-catalyst and ligand. The method is simple, straight-forward and proceeds to afford products in good isolated yields. The method holds potential for future applications in organic synthesis. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Synthesis of pharmacologically important naphthoquinones and anticancer activity of 2-benzyllawsone through DNA topoisomerase-II inhibition
Naphthoquinones are naturally occurring biologically active entities. Practical de novo syntheses of three naphthoquinones i.e. lawsone (1), lapachol (2), and β-lapachone (3b) have been achieved from commercially available starting materials. The conversion of lapachol (2) to β-lapachone (3b) was achieved through p-TSA/Iodine/BF3-etherate mediated regioselective cyclisation. Further, 2-alkyl and 2-benzyllawsone
