A preparation of the novel dispiroketal of D-glyceraldehyde is described. The diastereoselective addition of various organometallic reagents proceeds with anti selectivity due to the large steric bulk of the dispiroketal.

The selective protection of trans vicinal diols of a range of monosaccharides by formation of 1,8,13,16-tetraoxadispiro[5.0.5.4]hexadecanes (dispiroketals) is reported.

Chiral 1,4-diphenylphosphines 5-7 as well as thioether 8 were synthesized from tartrates employing Ley's "BDA" and "Dispoke" methodologies as the key step. A range of rigid, architecturally complex diols derived from dispiroketals have been synthesised. A bifunctional, C2-symmetrical, chiralauxiliary derived from these dihydroxylateddispiroketals has been used to induce a high degree of asymmetry in Michael additions of cuprates to a variety of di-α, β-unsaturated ester systems.
