Heating of a mixture of white phosphorus and sodium in diethylene glycol dimethyl ether in the presence of catalytic amounts of dibenzo-18-crown-6 affords a pure solution of sodium pentaphosphacyclopentadienide NaP5. One of the intermediate products is trisodium heptaphosphide Na3P7. The influence of the nature of a metal (Li, Na, K) on the formation of the pentaphosphacyclopentadienide anion was studied
Reaction of NaP5 with Half-Sandwich Complexes of Nickel: The First Example of an Ni-Promoted Transformation of the P5- Anion
The reaction of sodium pentaphosphacyclopentadienide, NaP5, with [Cp*NiBr(PPh3)] (Cp* = η5-C5Me5) gave only decomposition products. However, with [(η3-C3Ph3)NiBr(PMe2Ph)] sodium 1,2-diphosphacyclopentadienide was formed, which is the product of an unusual Ni-promoted degradation of the pentaphosphacyclopentadienide anion.

Reactions of sodium pentaphosphacyclopentadienide NaP5 with half-sandwich iron phosphine complexes gave pentaphosphaferrocenes or ferrocenes, depending on the nature and number of substituents in the cyclopentadienyl ring.
