Chain Elongation of Aldoses by Indium-Mediated Coupling with 3-Bromopropenyl Esters

A procedure is described for acyloxyallylation of unprotected aldoses with two functionalized reagents: 3-bromopropenyl acetate and 3-bromopropenyl benzoate. The reaction is performed in ethanol or a dioxane/water mixture in the presence of indium metal. The products are deesterified in the workup to afford unsaturated polyols, which are isolated as mixtures of two diastereomers. The major diastereomers are subjected to ozonolysis to afford new aldoses, which have been elongated by two carbon atoms compared to the starting materials. The new aldoses all have lyxo configuration at positions 2, 3, and 4.

A series of pyranosidic and furanosidic monosaccharide derivatives were monoacetylated in the 6-position with high regioselectivity and good to excellent yields by the pancreatin-catalyzed transesterification with vinyl acetate in the solvent system tetrahydrofuran/triethylamine.

A process for obtaining a mixture of C4-C8 and C9-C18 alkyl monoether of saccharide, comprising: a) a first step of acetalization or trans-acetalization of a saccharide or of a mixture of saccharides with a C4-C8 aliphatic aldehyde or the acetal thereof, b) a second consecutive or simultaneous step of acetalization or trans-acetalization of the product obtained in a) of the saccharide or mixture of saccharides with a C9-C18 aliphatic aldehyde or the acetal thereof, c) a step of catalytic hydrogenolysis of the saccharide acetals obtained, and d) a step of recovery of a mixture of C4-C8 and C9-C18 alkyl saccharide monoethers. The invention further relates to a mixture of C4-C8 and C9-C18 alkyl saccharide monoethers and the use thereof as a surfactant.

The use of glycoside polyols together with diol or triol-initiated polyols in the production of polyurethane elastomers provides elastomers which are thermally stable at temperatures of l40°F or higher. These polyurethane elastomers are useful as thermoconductivity barriers in window holders exposed to high-temperature conditions, as engine mounts on automobiles, as encapsulators for electronic distributors, and the like.
