    The invention provides a labeling composition for an intraocular tissue of a living individual, which specifically labels the intraocular tissue without need of an invasive operation such as exposure of an ocular tissue or injection of a staining agent into the ocular tissue or a nerve tissue linking to the ocular tissue, a method of noninvasively labeling an intraocular tissue of a living individual, and a screening method using the labeling composition for the intraocular tissues. The composition contains a compound capable of labeling at least a photoreceptor cell layer of a retina, wherein the compound is a staining compound having a particular structure as a partial structure thereof.

    The present invention has an object to provide a novel agent for anti-neurodegenerative diseases and solves the object by providing an agent for anti-neurodegenerative diseases containing, as an effective ingredient, the compound(s) represented by the following General formula 1: wherein in General formula 1, R 1 through R 3 independently represent a hydrogen atom or an appropriate substituent; Z 1 represents a heterocyclic ring and Z 2 represents the same or different heterocyclic or aromatic ring as in Z 1 , wherein the heterocyclic and aromatic rings optionally have a substituent; represents an integer of 0, 1 or 2; p represents an integer of 0 or 1, with the proviso that p is 1 when o is 0 or 2, and p is 0 when o is 1; R 1 and R 2 do not exist when o is 0, while, when p is 0, R 3 does not exist and the binding between the carbon atom to which R 2 binds and Z 2 is a single bond; X 1 − represents an appropriate counter anion and q represents an integer of 1 or 2.

    The synthesis is reported of eight pyridine–, benzothiazole– and benzimidazole–rhodanine zeromethine merocyanines as blue–sensitising dyes (1–8), and of three benzoxazole-rhodanine dimethine merocyanines as green-sensitising dyes (9–11). The compounds were characterised from UV–VIS, mass spectroscopic and NMR data, and the purity of the products was analysed using HPLC. Oxidation potentials were measured using cyclic voltammetry. Ionisation potentials and electron affinities were obtained by semi-empirical MOPAC calculations. The charge-density distributions of the pyridine and benzothiazole rhodanine dyes are in agreement with assignments in NMR spectroscopy. A linear dependence is found between the oxidation potential and ionisation potential, as well as between the reduction potential and electron affinity. Reflection spectra of 6 and 7 coated on photographic emulsions showed J-aggregate absorption at λ= 450 and 465 nm, respectively. The sensitising properties of the merocyanine dyes were evaluated in actual photographic T-grain emulsions.
