Flash vacuum pyrolysis of phenanthrene-9,10-dicarboxylic anhydride 5 and of 2,2-dimethyl-5-(9′-fluorenylidene)-1,3-dioxan-4,6-dione 8 at 1100°C/0.03–0.04 mm Hg gave pyrolysates which were analysed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and shown to contain phenanthrene 9 as a major constituent and biphenylene 2 as a minor one.

Methyl fluorene-9-carboxylate and 9-methyl-9-acetylfluorene have been nitrated and the products converted to 2-nitrophenanthrene and 2-nitro-9,10-dimethylphenanthrene, respectively.Acetylation of 9,10-dimethylphenanthrene has given only one ketone, probably the 3-isomer. 4-Nitrofluorenone has been synthesized by a convenient route.

developed a Pd-catalyzed annulation reaction of 2-iodobiphenyls with maleimides that act as a relay for C–H alkylation. The reaction features broad substrate scope and high efficiency, providing a straightforward method for the synthesis of succinimide-fused 9,10-dihydrophenanthrenes. The reaction using acenaphthylene as the relay has also been developed, which allows easy access to dibenzo[j,l]fluoranthenes
