    The cyclen based aromatic diaza-15-crown-5 and 18-crown-6 ether conjugates 1Tb-4Tb were designed as luminescent switches for sodium and potassium where the delayed Tb(III) emission, occurring as line-like emission bands between 490-622 nm, was 'switched on' upon recognition of these ions in pH 7.4 buffered water solution.

    We report a small-molecule two-photon fluorescent probe (ANa2) for Na(+) that shows a strong TPEF enhancement in response to Na(+) and can be easily loaded into live cells and can real time monitor the fluctuation of [Na]i in live cells and living tissue at more than 100 mum depth.

    Two photons are better than one: A twophoton probe (ANa1, see picture) shows strong twophoton fluorescence enhancement in response to Na+ and a dissociation constant (Kdi) of (26±2) mM in the cell. It can be easily loaded into the cells and can selectively detect intracellular free Na+ in live cells and living tissues at a depth of 100–200 μm for a long period of time.
