Unsymmetrical ethers are obtained in excellent yields by the catalytic etherification of alcohols with ketones or aldehydes in the presence of Pd/C under an atmospheric pressure of hydrogen when water produced by the reaction is continuously removed by bubbling hydrogen through the reaction mixture.

This invention relates to a palladium catalyst comprising a mesoporous aluminosilicate which has been treated with ammonia or a salt thereof, and palladium supported on said mesoporous aluminosilicate; and also to a process for producing an ether, which comprises reacting a cyclic acetal and hydrogen in the presence of the palladium catalyst.
Ether compounds, which are useful as solvents, cosmetics, detergents, lubricants, emulsifiers and so on, are produced by reacting (a) a hydroxy compound with a carbonyl compound or (b) a carbonyl compound under hydrogen atmosphere in the presence of a catalyst with ease and at a low cost. The reaction is carried out while removing out produced water by using a dehydrating agent during the reaction; by distilling off the water by azeotropic dehydration and the like; or by blowing gases such as hydrogen gas to flow through the reaction system.

Provided is a cleansingpreparation, which takes a clear liquid form, develops neither a reduction in cleansing power nor deteriorations in appearance and sensation upon application even when water is mixed in, and has resistance to water.
The clear liquid cleansing preparation contains the following ingredients (A) to (D):
(A) at least one nonionic surfactant selected from:
(a) a monoglycerol fatty acid ester having a C12-18 fatty acid residue,
(b) a polyglycerol fatty acid ester having a C12-18 fatty acid residue,
(c) isostearyl pentaerythryl glyceryl ether, or
(d) a liquid nonionic surfactant having polyalkylene glycol chains and exhibiting IOB value of from 0.75 to 1.05,
(B) a nonionic surfactant other than the first-mentioned nonionic surfactant (A), and exhibiting IOB value of at least 1.1
(C) a liquid oil ingredient, and
(D) at most 12 wt.% of water,
wherein the preparation is free of white turbidity when 50 parts by weight of water is added to 100 parts by weight of the preparation.
