Novel sulfonyl-functionalized ionic liquids (SFIL) with -SO3H and -SO2Cl groups have been designed, synthesized, and characterized. Being strong acidic substances, these ionic liquids have great potential as media and catalysts in many acid-catalyzed reactions.

Catalyst systems according to the invention are suitable for reactions forming separable product and catalyst phases and supported ionic liquid phase SILP applications.

Abstract The continuous dehydration of d -glucose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was carried out under mild conditions, using SO 3 H-functionalized acidic ionicliquids as catalysts and H 2 O-4-methyl-2-pentanone (MIBK) biphasic system as solvent.
