A novel R-configuration or S-configuration optically active alcohol of the formula (1),
CF3C*H(OH)(CH2)mO(CH2)nCH(CH3)2 (1)
wherein C* is an asymmetric carbon atom, m is an integer of 2 to 7, and n is an integer of 0 to 3;
and a process for the production thereof. The novel optically active secondary alcohol having a trifluoromethyl group on an asymmetric carbon atom and a branched alkyloxy group at a terminal, provided by the present invention, is useful as a raw material for the production of a novel liquid crystal compound.
