The synthesis of a second-generation cobalt catalyst for the formation of trans-THF products via the Mukaiyama aerobic oxidative cyclization is reported. Two procedures have been developed with the new water-soluble catalyst that give superior yields and greatly simplify purification compared to the previous catalysts.

This work reports a mild, efficient, and ligand-free Pd/C-catalyzed protocol for the oxidative crossdoublecarbonylation of amines and alcohols. Notably, the reaction does not requires any base, co-catalyst, dehydrating agent, or ligand. Pd/C solves the problem of catalyst recovery, and the catalyst was recycled up to six times.

Co(nmp)2 is an efficient catalyst for the aerobic oxidativecyclization of pent-4-en-1-ols to give 5-hydroxymethyl trans-tetrahydrofurans (THFs) as single diastereomers in high yield. The trans-THF pharmacophore is of interest because it is found in many biologically active natural products. The three-step synthesis of Co(nmp)2 described here gives the catalyst as a fine powder in 80–85% overall yield
