Cascade reactions of ortho-carbonyl-substituted benzonitriles with ((chloromethyl)sulfonyl)benzenes as pronucleophiles led to new isoindolin-1-ones with a tetrasubstituted C-3 position or to (Z)-3-(sulfonyl-methylene)isoindolin-1-ones.
