    In accordance with the present invention there is provided a new class of sterically demanding metallo-intercalators. These compounds intercalate between bases in a duplex polynucleotide, but only where the bases are not fully complementary, for example, where there is a base-pair mismatch. The compounds are sufficiently sterically demanding that intercalation between bases in fully complementary duplexes does not occur to a significant degree. These mismatch intercalators are useful for detecting DNA and RNA defects, for diagnosing disorders characterized by the presence or increase in DNA and/or RNA defects, and for treating such disorders. Further, the compounds are capable of catalyzing photolytic cleavage of nucleic acids at relatively long wavelengths, and under normal sunlight.

    A continuous process for converting carbonaceous material contained in one or more feedstocks into a liquid hydrocarbon product, said feedstocks including the carbonaceous material being in a feed mixture including one or more fluids, said fluids including water and further liquid organic compounds at least partly produced by the process in a concentration of at least 1% by weight, where the process comprises converting at least part of the carbonaceous material by pressurizing the feed mixture to a pressure in the range 250-400 bar; heating the feed mixture to a temperature in the range 370-450° C., and maintaining said pressurized and heated feed mixture in the desired pressure and temperature ranges in a reaction zone for a predefined time; cooling the feed mixture to a temperature in the range 25-200° C. and expanding the feed mixture to a pressure in the range of 1-70 bar, thereby causing the carbonaceous material to be converted to a liquid hydrocarbon product and separating from the converted feed mixture a fraction comprising liquid hydrocarbon product.

    Duplex polynucleotides containing damage or errors are detected with hindered intercalating compounds which are capable of intercalating only in the presence of such damage or error. Conditions characterized by the presence of polynucleotide errors or damage are treated with such compounds that are capable of catalyzing polynucleotide cleavage with light. Suitable compound include compounds of the formula: Rh(R 1 )(R 2 )(R 3 ) 3+ where R 1 and R 2 are each independently aryl, heteroaryl, substituted aryl or substituted heteroaryl of 1 to 5 rings, and R 3 is a group of the formula 1 where x and z are each independently an integer from 1 to 4 and y is an integer from 1 to 2, and R 4 , R 5 , and R 6 are each independently H—, halo, HO—, H 2 N—, CN—, O 2 N—, HS—, O 3 S—, O 3 SO—, —COOH, —CONH 2 , R, RO—, RNH—, R a R b N—, RO 3 S—, RO 3 SO—, —COOR, —CONHR, or —CONR a R b , where R, R a and R b are each independently lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, or phenyl, or two R 4 , R 5 , or R 6 together form a fused aryl ring.
