  • Macrocycles by Ring-Closing Metathesis

    The ruthenium carbene complexes 1 and 2 (0.05-5 mol%) catalyse highly efficient macrocyclization reactions of 1,ω-dienes by ring-closing metathesis (RCM). Key parameters for successful RCM are (i) the presence of a functional group which serves as a relay entity that assembles the reacting sites, (ii) an appropriate distance between this polar group and the alkenes to be metathesized, and (iii) low steric congestion near the double bonds. Contrary to previous assumptions, however, the ring size formed and the conformational predisposition of the substrates for ring closure turned out to be of minor importance. These aspects are illustrated by some straightforward syntheses of macrocyclic lactones, lactams, ethers and ketones, including the musk odored perfume ingredients Exaltolide, Exaltone and Arova 16, of the macrolide recifeiolide (24), as well as of the alkaloids epilachnene (40) and its homologue 9-propyl-10-azacyclododecan-12-olide (39), which are active principles of the defense secretions of the pupae of the mexican beetle Epilachnar varivestis .

    An emulsion composition of a modified polypropylene. It can have exceedingly improved emulsion stability because the modified polypropylene used has extremely high solubility in solvents and is easily emulsifiable. The modified-polypropylene emulsion composition comprises water and a modified polypropylene dispersed and emulsified therein, and is characterized in that the modified polypropylene has a racemic diad content [r] of 0.12 to 0.88 and has hydrophilic functional groups in a number of 0.5 or larger on the average per molecular chain of the polypropylene.

    Embodiments of the invention include apparatus and systems for hydrocarbon synthesis and methods regarding the same. In an embodiment, the invention includes a process for creating a hydrocarbon product stream comprising reacting a reaction mixture in the presence of a catalyst inside of a reaction vessel to form a product mixture, the reaction mixture comprising a carbon source and water. The temperature inside the reaction vessel can be between 450 degrees Celsius and 600 degrees Celsius and the pressure inside the reaction vessel can be above supercritical pressure for water. In an embodiment, the invention includes an extrusion reactor system for creating a hydrocarbon product stream. The temperature inside the extrusion reactor housing between 450 degrees Celsius and 600 degrees Celsius. Pressure inside the reaction vessel can be above supercritical pressure for water. Other embodiments are also included herein.
