The adenine, cytosine and thymine peptide nucleic acid (PNA) monomers and PNA T-10 oligomers bearing either a diacetylenic or stearoyl moiety at the N- or C-terminus have been successfully prepared. Lipophilic peptide nucleic acids containing a 1,3-diyne function: synthesis, characterization and production of derived polydiacetylene liposomes

Adenine-, cytosine- and thymine-containing peptide nucleic acid (PNA) monomers have been synthesized in which either diacetylenic or stearoyl moieties are attached to the N-or C-terminus; the diacetylenic group is embedded within a long hydrocarbon chain. A range of analogous lipophilic functionalized PNA oligomers have been prepared using either solid phase synthesis or a post-synthetic solution phase procedure following cleavage of the PNA oligomer from the solid Support. Selected functionalized PNA monomers and oligomers have been incorporated into liposomal polydiacetylenes and characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. Preliminary investigations show that blue PDA-liposomes containing thymine-based PNAs can be formed and that production of liposomes with other PNA systems are viable. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Indicator compositions of the invention include an organic polymer and undergo a color change, which may be reversible or irreversible, in a time dependent manner following an initiation event. Also provided are indicator devices that include the indicator compositions of the invention. The compositions of the invention find use in a variety of different applications.

The subject invention provides a two-phase liquid-liquid extraction process that enables sorting and separation of single-walled carbon nanotubes based on (n, m) type and/or diameter. The two-phase liquid extraction method of the invention is based upon the selective reaction of certain types of nanotubes with electron withdrawing functional groups as well as the interaction between a phase transfer agent and ionic moieties on the functionalized nanotubes when combined in a two-phase liquid solution. Preferably, the subject invention enables efficient, bulk separation of metallic/semi-metallic nanotubes from semi-conducting nanotubes. More preferably, the subject invention enables efficient, bulk separation of specific (n, m) types of nanotubes.

Provided are methods, compositions and articles of manufacture for detecting biomarkers indicative of exposure of a mammal to organophosphate compounds. The organophosphate compound includes pesticides, their metabolites and highly reactive organophosphoryl compounds. In one aspect of the invention, the biomarker results from interaction of the organophosphate compound with a polypeptide such as a serine hydrolase that includes acetylcholiestersae. The interaction of a biomarker so derived with a optical sensor comprising a receptor bound to a biopolymer results in an optical readout that reports the presence of the biomarker. In one aspect of the invention the receptor that is bound to a biopolymer, such as a poly-di-acetylene polymer, is a antibody that selectively recognizes the biomarker.
