    A highly integrated two-step strategy was developed for the selective synthesis of renewable cyclopentadiene (CPD) and methylcyclopentadiene (MCPD) with xylose or the hemicelluloses extracted from real biomass. Compared with the conventional fossil route, the new synthetic strategy has evident advantages in the renewability and higher availability of feedstock.

    A continuous process for the production of a metha­crylic acid ester of a C₁ to C₄ saturated aliphatic alco­hol in the presence of a catalyst is disclosed. This process contemplates continuously introducing into a plug-­flow reactor a feed stream containing methacrylic acid, a C₁ to C₄ saturated aliphatic alcohol in stoichiometric excess relative to the methacrylic acid present, an ester­ification catalyst, and a liquid organic substance having a volatility no greater than that of methacrylic acid. The feed stream thus introduced into the plug-flow reactor is preferably maintained at substantially atmospheric pressure, while the contained methacrylic acid reactant is held at an esterification temperature and for a time period sufficient to esterify at least a portion of the introduced methacrylic acid. The admixture thus produced is continuously fractionated, preferably in a distillation zone or column, into a vaporized distillate stream and a liquid bottoms stream. The distillate stream has a rela­tively greater methacrylic acid ester content than the bottoms stream. A portion of the bottoms stream, consti­tuted primarily by the liquid organic substance and the esterification catalyst, is recycled to the reactor while the remainder is purged.

    A method is provided for making a SiO₂-SnO₂ mixed-oxide which comprises the steps of: combining, with agitation, respective effective amounts of a silica sol containing silica particles of 50 to 200 (5 to 20nm) Angstroms in diameter, and a slurry of SnO₂ containing particles of SnO₂ to produce a freely-flowing slurry having a SiO₂-SnO₂ weight ratio of 0.05 to 6; solidifying the produced, freely-flowing slurry to a gel; drying the obtained gel to a crushable solid state; and calcining the dried gel for a time period sufficient to remove adsorbed moisture therefrom.
