Treatment of 2-(3-hydroxy-5-phenylpent-4-yn-1-yl)-2(trimethylsilylmethyl)tetrahydrofuran (18) with Co-2(CO)(8) gave the corresponding cobalt complex, which was subsequently exposed to methanesulfonyl chloride and triethylamine in methylene chloride at refluxing temperature to provide the oxocane derivative 20 in 72% yield.
