We describe the use of the new “threading-followed-by-swelling” protocol to synthesize molecular rotaxanes by modifying our previously reported “oxygen-deficient” macrocycle/dibenzylammonium ion molecular recognition system and using a cis-1-[(Z)-alk-1‘-enyl]-2-vinylcyclopropane motif as the swellable terminal group.
developed a “threading‐followed‐by‐swelling” protocol to synthesize [2]rotaxanes efficiently and atom economically. Our protocol employs cis‐1‐[(Z)‐alk‐1′‐enyl]‐2‐vinylcyclopropane units as the termini of the threadlike components; these end groups are converted into more‐sizable cycloheptadiene motifs, which function as stopper units, through Cope rearrangements at elevated temperature. We used this approach
We report a pH-controllable molecular switch whose switching can be monitored by the naked eye; this system involves the formation of a complex between a [2]rotaxane—featuring dibenzylammonium and 4,4′-bipyridinium stations—and a TTF-side-walled molecular clip.

A new host molecule in which only one diethylene glycol chain (i.e., a loop possessing only three oxygen atoms) suitably positioned in a macroring recognizes a DBA(+) ion to form a 1:1 pseudorotaxane-like complex. To confirm unambiguously that the pseudorotaxane exists in solution, a corresponding interlocked rotaxane molecule was synthesized. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
