A process for preparing lacidipine, comprising reacting a t-butoxy carbonyl methyl aryl phosphonium halide with o-phthalaldehyde, and further reacting a product comprising (E)-3-(2-formylphenyl)-2-propenoic acid, 1,1-dimethyl ethyl ester, without isolation, with ethyl-3-amino crotonate.

Abstract Five relatedsubstances (impurities) were detected in lacidipine bulk drugsubstance by a simple high-performance liquid chromatographic method (HPLC) and were identified by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS). These relatedsubstances were independently synthesized, characterized, and co-injected with the sample containing impurities.
