  Abstract The action of thionyl chloride on γ -ketoacids was revisited. The reaction does not yield the corresponding γ-ketoacyl chlorides as reported earlier, but instead efficiently produces γ -chlorobutyrolactones. The chemical properties of this function are summarily explored, along with some characteristic spectroscopic data.
