  (EN) Novel compositions of matter and processes for their preparation. Particularly, the present invention relates to novel monocyclic $g(b)-lactams of formula (I), having a carbonyl group, other than a negatively charged group, attached to the N-1 position. These compounds are useful as antimicrobial agents or as intermediates thereto. The present invention also provides a novel process for making these compounds which utilizes palladium (O)-catalyzed carbonylation of an appropriate 2-bromo-1-propen-3-yl amine and novel intermediates prepared by this process.(FR) Nouvelles compositions et procédés pour leur préparation. En particulier, la présente invention concerne de nouvelles $g(b)-lactames monocycliques de formule (I), ayant un groupe carbonyle, autre qu'un groupe chargé négativement, attaché en position N-1. Ces composés sont utiles en tant qu'agents antimicrobiens ou en tant qu'intermédiaires de ces agents. La présente invention concerne également un nouveau procédé de production de ces composés, lequel utilise la carbonylation catalysée par palladium (O) d'une amine 2-bromo-1-propène-3-yl appropriée, ainsi que de nouveaux intermédiaires préparés par ce procédé.

  Treatment of a variety of ketones with lithium diisopropylamide followed by p-toluenesulfonyl chloride gives α-chloroketones in good yields. In addition, a polymer tosyl chloride reagent has also been shown to effect this transformation.
