The synthesis of indolocarbazoles containing hydrogen bonding functionality mimicking the pharmacophore contained within bioactive indolocarbazole natural products is reported. The indolocarbazoles are prepared via palladium catalyzed cross coupling of indoles followed by photochemical and thermal annulation reactions of chromium carbene complexes.

An efficient copper-catalyzed pi-activation protocol has been developed for the intramolecular hydroarylation of alkynes. The strategy has been used in atom-economical syntheses of beta-carboline analogues. The cycloisomerized products were obtained in moderate to good yields.

The synthesis of indolocarbazoles was achieved via photochemical and thermal annulation reactions of chromium Fischercarbenecomplexes.
