The macrocyclic ketones are prepared in the gas phase at temperatures above 500° C. rapidly and in a simple manner from alcohols of the formula IIa and IIb directly with a high yield.

Described are mixtures consisting essentially of oxomacrocyclic compounds containing greater than about 40 weight % Δ3-cyclotetradecen-1-one and greater than about 40 weight % cyclotetradecanone and less than about 5 weight %, of Δ2-cyclo-tetradecen-1-one, perfumery uses thereof and chemo-selective catalytic hydrogen process for preparing same by hydrogenating mixtures containing significant concentrations, greater than 15 weight %, of Δ2-cyclotetradecen-1-one. The oxocarbocyclic compound-containing mixtures have advantageous musk aroma imparting, augmenting and enhancing perfumery properties causing the mixtures to be useful in perfume compositions, perfumed articles and perfumed polymers, including particles and fibers produced therefrom.

A process of obtaining a purified geometric isomer of an unsaturated macrocyclic compound is disclosed herein. The process is effected by contacting an ion exchange medium comprising silver ions with a mixture comprising at least one geometric isomer of the unsaturated macrocyclic compound, to thereby obtain at least one fraction comprising the purified geometric isomer of the macrocyclic compound. A system configured for performing the process is also disclosed.

A method for producing a chewing gum with a controlled release of a bitterness inhibitor, as well as the chewing gum so produced, is obtained by physically modifying the release properties of the bitterness inhibitor by coating and drying. The bitterness inhibitor is coated by encapsulation, partially coated by agglomeration, entrapped by absorption, or treated by multiple steps of encapsulation, agglomeration, and absorption. The coated bitterness inhibitor is preferably then co-dried and particle sized to produce a release-modified bitterness inhibitor for use in chewing gum. When incorporated into the chewing gum, these particles are adapted to produce a fast release or a delayed release when the gum is chewed. The preferred bitterness inhibitor is sodium gluconate.
