acetonitrile at 300 nm resulted in the clean conversion of the starting materials into a mixture of photoproducts. The major product in all cases was a bicyclic pyrrole or furan fused to an eight membered ring (43–70 % yield). PtCl2 catalysed cascade cyclization of an enediyneâenone system to afford a tetracyclic chromenone is reported, which proceeds through two consecutive highly regioselective 6-endoâdig cyclizations in a single step with the formation of two new CâC bonds and two new rings in excellent yield. A mechanism for this transformation is proposed based on the isolated intermediates.

Abstract An efficient method for conversion of ketones to their corresponding dimethyl and diethyl acetals and of cyclic β-diketones into β-keto enol ethers using Fe(OTs)3 as a catalyst is described.
